[on the edge of being]

In an artistic evolution, or a personal evolution there is always a close knit relationship between self discovery and self destruction. In order to find yourself you must destroy yourself, at least destroy notions of yourself. These things happen simultaneously, often times without recognition. It also never stops happening. This power struggle between discovery and destruction keeps updating our identity. This series is a reflection of that relationship. It focuses on the tension that an individual feels when trying to discover their identity and the evolution that transpires in the mind while discovering. The series is primarily self-portraits inside of my living room. The room itself becomes the metaphor for the mind. The string represents the chaos that engulfs you in this process. It’s intricate but direct. Its malleable but also fixed. It becomes lifelines to hang onto. Ultimately it wraps around me and suspends me into an embryonic-cocoon like position, symbolizing development and rebirth. There is a chronology to these photographs as the room originally starts off with no string and slowly becomes full of string. The series celebrates the bond that these two juxtaposing ideas share, that it simply exists and that it is crucial to human, self, and societal development and progress.
